-By the time he was a student at St Paul's College at the University of Sydney, Hervey was a troubled soul. His letters to Nora, his step-mother but only 10-years older than he, appear manipulative and suggest that his problems with money and alcohol had already started. He told Nora that he had blown his chances of doing well in his exams, but only because he had been sick. He was thinking of breaking off his engagement to Maggie, but only because he thought he'd acted dishonourably to her all through their relationship. He thanked Nora for sending him money as he'd gone through all his allowance, having given his last sixpence to a blind old beggar.((M-P family papers, NLA MS 7801, Box 1, folder 22, Hervey to Nora, 13 May 1877, 5 October 1877.))   +By the time he was a student at St Paul's College at the University of Sydney, Hervey was a troubled soul.  Her father was Alexander McDonald (or Macdonald) of Brisbane, previously of the Argyleshire Highlanders and a customs officer, who died 26 October 1872.((this compares with belief she was daughter of neighbouring property Dugandan - to check)) He had been born in Clare, Ireland. Her mother was Mary nee McGilchrist of Courtbridge, Scotland; Mary's father had iron works in that industrial town.((‘Questions to be answered by T.L.M-P’, 6pp Memoranda by the Herald Office, Somerset House, London re Burke’s Colonial Gentry.)) Margaret was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 12 September 1857 and baptised there by the Rev. Dr Tait.((‘Questions to be answered by T.L.M-P’, 6pp Memoranda by the Herald Office, Somerset House, London re Burke’s Colonial Gentry; Thomas Bertram M-P, //Some Australasian Families Descended from Royalty//, ms, n.d. p.10.)) Apparently TLM-P objected to Hervey' marriage, but more likely because of concerns about Hervey's alcoholism rather than doubts about her.((M-P Family papers, NLA MS 7801, special set 12, folder 8, 12/62.)) It was not a happy marriage, and at some stage she left him as Hervey wrote to Nora that he would not file for divorce as her desertion was not long enough for him to have legal grounds to do so.((M-P Family papers, NLA MS 7801, Box 1, folder 22.)) It is not surprising she returned: a mother with a baby to support had little options in this age of minimal state assistance.\\ Her father was Alexander McDonald (or Macdonald) of Brisbane, previously of the Argyleshire Highlanders and a customs officer, who died 26 October 1872.((this compares with belief she was daughter of neighbouring property Dugandan - to check)) He had been born in Clare, Ireland.  Like others in his family, Hervey was buried in Toowong Cemetery.((‘Questions to be answered by T.L.M-P’, 6pp Memoranda by the Herald Office, Somerset House, London re Burke’s Colonial Gentry: TLM-P referred to it as 'South Brisbane cemetery'.)) However, his grave is apart from the large family plot for reasons which are now unknown.((T.A. & M.T. M-P, pers. comm.)) Maggie M-P remarried in 1891, to another barrister, Charles Crawford Smyth.((Robert M-P, //The Blood Royal of the Murray-Priors//, p.16; Qld marriage registration B15171.)) Ever the conscientious patriarch, TLM-P assured her that the allowance he had given her would continue in her son's favour.((M-P Family papers, NLA MS 7801, special set 12, folder 8, 12/70 and 12/76.)) His care extended beyond his death: in his will and his second codicil, he left young Hervey £3,000 to be invested with the interest paid to support his 'maintenance education and advancement in life'.\\ Like others in his family, Hervey was buried in Toowong Cemetery.((‘Questions to be answered by T.L.M-P’, 6pp Memoranda by the Herald Office, Somerset House, London re Burke’s Colonial Gentry: TLM-P referred to it as 'South Brisbane cemetery'.)) -===== Hervey Morres MacDonald Murray-Prior ===== +
-Hervey Morres Macdonald M-P was born on 25 April 1883, the only son of Hervey and Maggie M-P.((QBDM, registration number 1883/B/30531)) His parents followed family tradition and had him baptised at All Saints Church of England, Brisbane.((Bernard Burke, //A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Colonial Gentry//, Melbourne: E.A. Petherick, 1891-95, p.50; 'Questions to be answered by T.L.M-P’, 6pp Memoranda by the Herald Office, Somerset House, London re Burke’s Colonial Gentry.)) Virtually nothing is know of his life other than his birth and death. He died at his mother's home in Stanley Street, South Brisbane on 19 August 1918, aged 35, after 'after a long and painful illness'.((//SMH// death notice, 28 August 1918, p.10.)) His death certificate reveals that he had tuberculosis, dying of tubercular broncho-pneumonia and heart failure. Again following family practice, he was buried at Toowong cemetery, Brisbane.((Historical Death Image, 1918/B27764, copy with J. Godden.)) He had no known children.\\ +
